Penny has recently undertaken legal work on a private basis providing expert witness reports for civil and criminal proceedings. She has, through her NHS work, provided a number of reports for legal purposes based on her assessment and treatment of children and young people. She is experienced in the use of formal assessment tools used to ascertain capacity, including IQ assessments and those used to clarify mental health difficulties. She has extensive experience of interview-style assessments.

Penny graduated from the University of Plymouth clinical psychology doctoral training programme in 2005, and prior top this she specialised in both young and adult offenders. Since her graduation she has worked across Gloucestershire Children and Young People’s Service (CYPS), providing clinical services to young people and their families, alongside supervision and consultation to other professionals. She is an experienced member of the team and holds chartered status through the British Psychological Society and is regulated by the Health Professionals Council.

As part of her role within CYPS, Penny is one of two lead clinicians within the Parent, Infant and Early Years’ Service. She provides psychological assessment, formulation and intervention for preschool children including those who are Looked After by the local authority and/or subject to Child Protection Plans. Penny routinely liaises with other professionals and engages in multi-agency meetings for these, and other children, drawing from relevant psychological theory to aid understanding and inform practice.

In addition Penny specialises in Children with a Learning Disability, and until recently held a specialist post within the Children with a Learning Disability Team. She also specialises in adolescent and family work, and is experienced in a range of mental health difficulties. She has also worked with adult offenders and within an adult learning disability service. Penny routinely assesses young people where there are concerns about their safety, both from themselves and others.

Alongside her clinical role Penny was responsible for implementing and continuing the Choice and Partnership Approach within her team. This led to more effective and efficient working within the team as well as depleting waiting times.

Work Approach

Penny's approach has developed over her years of practice. She believes it is most important to share an understanding of the difficulties with the people she sees rather than offer a prescriptive approach. By sharing an understanding, change and solutions can be explored.

Penny's training and experience has led to her working in a number of different ways, drawing from a range of models. Central to her practice is the need to be non-judgemental and curious about the challenges people face and the difficulties they may be currently experiencing.
