The Role of Values in Client Work: An Acceptance and Commitment Therapy Approach

This 1-day workshop will use experiential exercises, case studies and theoretical material to explore the role of values in psychotherapy from an ACT perspective.


Topics to be covered include:

  • Values: what are they and why do they matter in therapy?
  • Values identification, clarification and strengthening
  • Relationship between values and behavioural change
  • Values for clients
  • Values for therapists
  • Therapeutic tools available for measuring and working with values

The workshop is suitable for a range of health professionals working therapeutically with people with mental health difficulties. A basic knowledge of the ACT model would be an advantage for participants, as this will only be briefly reviewed at the beginning of the workshop  the majority of the day will focus specifically on working with values.


Workshop lead: Helen Bolderston, Chartered Clinical Psychologist. Helen is an experienced clinician and trainer. She has worked for many years as a Consultant Clinical Psychologist in the NHS. She is currently engaged in a PhD focusing on personality disorders from an ACT perspective, as well as providing training and supervision.


Helen will be recording this workshop for her own professional development purposes, and booking a place on the workshop will be taken as consent for this recording. No content from the recording will be published, used in research, used in other workshops or put to any use other than to support Helen’s work as a trainer.
